Incorporating her faith into the future workplace, Rachel Perry plans to use her FCS education major as her chosen ministry.

“I feel like family and consumer science is a good mission platform,” Perry said. “This is where I feel like God has put me. This will be my method of affecting the world for a greater purpose.”

To use this major as her mission field, Perry said she is learning about many possibilities of the field as well as gaining her teaching license.

“My specific area is a broad overview of the entire discipline, so I’m not really specialized in one area or another,” Perry said. “I have my hand in a lot of different cookie jars. I do a lot of the sewing, cooking, child development and psychology. You name it, I’ve done it.”

Perry also said that her teachers and fellow students in the department have helped engage her in to such a broad major.

“My favorite part has definitely been my relationship with my professors and the closeness of the department,” Perry said. “It’s kind of small, so we’re all friends, and the professors are like family.”

The education part of her major has also helped Perry appreciate her professors even more.

“I think the most challenging thing for me has been that I knew that teaching would be hard, but I had no idea how hard it would be,” Perry said. “So much of teaching is not teaching. It’s paperwork, studying and doing lessons. So thank a teacher because I had no idea how much that mine sacrificed to get me where I am.”

After she graduates, Perry wants to teach high school students about nutrition and other areas that will help improve their lives and relationships.
