The Department of Music presented free concerts in April, including Chorus and Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble, Jazz Band, and Symphonic Band.
Thursday, April 7, 6 p.m., Chorus and Orchestra, Administration Auditorium | The Chorus performed Brahm’s “Eine Deutsches Requiem” in English. The chorus performed this piece in February with 200 other singers and the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra. The last time the University Chorus and Orchestra performed this piece on campus was in 1983. Mike Chance, the director of Harding Orchestra, is prepared the two groups for their performance, and Dr. Cliff Ganus directed.
Sunday, April 10, 2 p.m., Percussion Ensemble, Reynolds Recital Hall | Under direction of Dr. Wesley Parker, this ensemble showcased percussion instruments exclusively and cover a variety of musical styles. The concert repertoire included pieces with varying percussion instruments such as “Stubernic,” which featured three percussionists performing on marimba, and “Wired,” which featured four percussionists playing 51 different instruments.
Friday, April 15, 7 p.m., Jazz Band, Reynolds Recital Hall | Under the direction of Dr. Andrew Cook, the Jazz Band performs blues, swing, Latin, funk and contemporary styles at campus concerts and area jazz festivals. The group was featured last month in Spring Sing, the University’s musical variety show, which draws more than 10,000 audience members to multiple performances.
Saturday, April 16, 1 p.m., Symphonic Band, Reynolds Recital Hall | Comprised of around 20 students from various majors, the Symphonic Band performed music from W. A. Mozart, Georges Bizet, Leonard Bernstein and John Williams.
