Seven theatre students presented opera scenes as part of an opera workshop class on April 17 at 2 p.m. in the Reynolds Recital Hall. Students learned the necessary music and staging in class and will present each scene in costume.
The hour long program consisted of several scenes from different operas, such as “The Merry Wives of Windsor” by Otto Nicolai, “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, “Trouble in Tahiti” by Leonard Bernstein and “The Marriage of Figaro” by Mozart. Scenes will be about 5 minutes long, with exception of a 20-minute scene from “The Marriage of Figaro.” Lis Jones, assistant professor of music, provided piano accompaniment for students.
According to Laura Eads, instructor of music, the program is beneficial to students whether they participate only for fun or because they plan to be performers or teachers.
“It is extremely important for our voice students to have a well-rounded experience,” Eads said. “For those students who plan to go to graduate school and pursue a performance degree, it is critical to have experience in this kind of performing. Additionally, even for students who plan to go directly into teaching in the public schools, learning a wide variety of music will enable them to be better educators.”
