Gov. Asa Hutchinson addressed the 74th session of Arkansas Girls State Wednesday evening. This is the 26th consecutive year the University has hosted the event, which began May 30 and will conclude June 3.
Girls State is a program coordinated by the American Legion Auxiliary Department of Arkansas to provide a week’s training in government, leadership and good citizenship to outstanding high school juniors. Participants spend the week creating a fictitious state through the election of public officials on local, county and state levels. They then carry out the duties of each respective public office.
Hutchinson delivered the inaugural address as elected officials of Girls State took office. He spoke to the potential of each participant has in shaping the future, the power of women in important positions, and the responsibility of all elected officials to do their sworn duty.
Other state officials were in attendance for the event, including state commissioner, treasurer, and representatives for the secretary of state. Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Howard Brill led participants in their various oaths of office.
As part of the conclusion of Arkansas Girls State, participants spent Thursday in various state government offices shadowing their real-world counterparts.
