Arkansas State Youth Conference presented a panel discussion titled “The Struggle Is Real — Police and the Black Community” in the Heritage Auditorium Friday, July 15 at 7:30 p.m. The panel was a part of a three-day conference for high school students sponsored by McAlmont Church of Christ in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
Conference panel discussions usually center on struggles faced by youth. Friday’s discussion, moderated by McAlmont Church of Christ youth minister Robin Mitchell, included the following panelists:
-Tommy Norman, North Little Rock Police Department -Kennan Sapp, Pulaski County Sherriff’s Office -Takeisha Fifer, Little Rock Police Department -Colby Mitchell, chairman of the Center for Social Justice in Memphis, Tennessee -Marquis Cooper, J.A. Fair High School counselor -Willie Mae Murdock, Lee County School District Superintendent -Vivian Flowers, state representative for the 17th District
“The purpose of the panel discussion is to have an open dialogue for our young people to gain awareness of how to properly engage with law enforcement and learn how we can help and heal each other in the face of all of this hurting in the community,” Mitchell said. “Many parents are struggling with how to encourage their sons and advise them with all the media coverage and community distress. This is an excellent opportunity to make a positive impact.”
In addition to the 175 conference attendees, the community was invited to attend the panel discussion free of charge.
