Communication professor wins broadcasting award

Professor of Communication Dutch Hoggatt received third place in the faculty news competition for the 2016 Broadcast Education Association Super-Regional Conference.

The Super-Regional Conference features all Broadcast Education Association member schools in the south central and southeastern U.S. BEA consists of more than 2,000 faculty members, colleges, universities and students.

Hoggatt researched, wrote, shot, edited and produced his video, "Elvis and Harding." The project showcased Elvis Presley’s connection to Harding University.

“In a way you could say that Harding University — Harding College at the time — is responsible for introducing Elvis to the world,” Hoggatt said.

Harding College’s radio station WHBQ-AM in Memphis, Tennessee, was the first to play Elvis’s debut record, “That’s All Right/Blue Moon of Kentucky” in the summer of 1954.

Awards will be presented Oct. 13-15 at the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina.
