Campus Activities Board hosts I Heart HU week

The Campus Activities Board hosted I Heart HU week Oct. 24-28. The week consisted of free events, activities and giveaways to celebrate the community of Harding.

“I think I Heart HU week is a great opportunity to celebrate and show our appreciation for Harding and its students who go here with a week full of fun activities,” student CAB co-director Presley Nixon said. “We’ve been really looking forward to it all semester.”

The week was created in 2009 to provide fun activities and events for the students. Director of Campus Life Logan Light said I Heart HU is built upon the feeling he had when coming to Harding for the first time.

“I Heart HU week celebrates our camaraderie, and it is my hope that every year it appeals in some way to every student on campus,” Light said.

Raised in a military family, Light moved between nine different states before he came to Harding in 2000. He said the University gave him a sense of belonging because the four years spent at Harding as an undergraduate were the longest he had lived in one area.

“Thinking back, it was likely all of the mobbing around that made a place like Harding — attended by students who were from all 50 states and more that 50 different countries — so appealing to me,” Light said. “It was the people on this campus who spoke to me, and it felt like I had met all of my extended family for the first time. It felt like I had a place to call home.”

Magician Justin Flom kicked off the main events of the week at 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 25, in the Administration Auditorium. Flom specializes in close-up magic and is the first magician to ever perform card tricks for a sold-out crowd at Madison Square Garden.

On Thursday, Oct. 27, CAB hosted an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest game of Knock Out. The current record is 702 people set by the Dallas Mavericks. Light said Dr. Stephen Burks, chair of the kinesiology department, developed the idea to celebrate the opening of the renovated Ganus Activities Complex.

CAB hosted a block party at 10:20 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28 in Legacy Park.

“We want students to have a week full of fun things to do at no cost to them,” Nixon said. “I think I Heart HU week enhances students’ Harding experience because it shows them that CAB really cares about giving them fun events to attend just because we want them to take a break and enjoy themselves.”
