Harding University hosts TEDxHardingU

Nov. 14, 2017 |

Harding University hosted its first ever TEDxHardingU event on Tuesday, Nov. 14 in the Reynolds Recital Hall on Harding campus.

The theme for the event was “Vision for the Vulnerable,” and it consisted of seven speakers who presented in two segments with an intermission for networking and sharing.

Presentations included:

  • “From Ferguson to Memphis: Reversing Separatism to Improve Social Justice,” Chris Simpson, minister, Holmes Road Church of Christ
  • “Surround Sound Life,” Darren Irby, national marketing officer, American Red Cross
  • “Life Is the Sum of Our Choices,” Phyllis Bell, child welfare senior advisor and intern director to Gov. Asa Hutchinson
  • “On Time,” Monte Cox, dean, Harding University College of Bible and Ministry
  • “Living Fearlessly,” Jerry Mitchell, investigative reporter, The Clarion-Ledger
  • “A Little Help,” Raneisha Stassin, senior public relations major, Harding University
  • “I’m About to Lose Control,” Mark Moore, CEO, MANA Nutrition
This extremely limited seating event was available only to holders of a free TEDxHardingU ticket. TEDx events are intentionally small and designed to be intimate settings that provoke discussion and promote connection.

The added “x” characterizes a similar event to TED talks but on a local scale. TEDx talks are independently organized TED events that are held in thousands of venues around the world. With rules and guidelines from the parent TED organization, the distinctive feature is a collection of short presentations that are less than 18 minutes long. A team of nine faculty and staff members helped organize, plan and curate the speakers.

The talks will be posted online at thelink.harding.edu , Harding’s student publications website. For more information about upcoming events and other free and low cost services Harding provides, visit www.harding.edu/community .

About TEDx, x = independently organized event

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today's leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED's annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com . TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED's open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com , where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project , which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed ; the annual million-dollar TED Prize , which funds exceptional individuals with a "wish," or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx , which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
