Honors College hosts West Point military academy instructor

The Harding University Honors College will host Capt. Ryan O. Scott, instructor at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York, as part of the L.C. Sears Collegiate Seminar Series at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20 in Cone Chapel. Scott will speak on the topic "The Christian Soldier: Calling or Contradiction?" The event is open to the public and admission is free.

“The significance of this topic touches the Harding family because it has taken responsibility for developing officers through its ROTC program,” said Scott. “Many of my soldiers feel a call to serve something greater than self. My challenge as a Christian leader of soldiers is to introduce them to service in the kingdom.”

Scott serves as executive officer and instructor in the military science division in the department of military instruction at West Point. There he helps develop curriculum, design and execute field training for cadets, and provide classroom instruction.

“The role of a Christian in the military is of immediate importance to me,” said Scott. “I am educating future leaders to understand their responsibilities to their soldiers in light of the kingdom.”

Scott received his bachelor’s degree and Master of Business Administration from Harding. He is currently pursuing a doctorate in organizational leadership through Abilene Christian University.

The L.C. Sears series was named after the University’s first academic dean and was designed to contribute to his quest for academic excellence.
