President plunges for Special Olympics Arkansas

Feb. 20, 2019 | University President Bruce McLarty plunged into the fountain in front of the McInteer Bible and World Missions Center on campus on Feb. 20 following chapel at 10 a.m. in front of students, faculty and special olympics athletes as a part of the Special Olympics Arkansas Polar Plunge. “Special Olympics has a special place in my heart and in the collective heart of Harding University,” McLarty said. “Special Olympics athletes deserve every possible encouragement as they face the challenges of their everyday lives and as they compete. Jumping in a cold fountain is a small price to pay to help these courageous athletes.” The Polar Plunge is a Special Olympics Arkansas fundraiser where individuals and teams across the state jump into various bodies of cold water to raise money and awareness for the organization. Dr. McLarty has been participating in this event for five years and has collectively raised over $5,000 for Special Olympics Arkansas. Members of the Cannon-Clary College of Education’s service organization, S.A.L.T. (Scholars Advancing Learning and Teaching), held fundraisers for the event, and McLarty said he would take the plunge if the organization accepted his challenge to raise at least $500. Assistant Professor of Education Lisa Bryant, S.A.L.T. sponsor, said the bake sale raised $550. The official Searcy Polar Plunge event has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. at the First Security Stadium in a pool provided by the Searcy Fire Department. The Bison Football team will be participating in the Plunge by car hopping at the Race Street Sonic on March 2. All proceeds will benefit Special Olympics of Arkansas.
