The Harding University Department of Theatre will present “Check on Chekhov” in the Ulrey Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Feb. 15-16 and 21-23. The production is based upon material by Anton Chekhov with additional material by professors Dr. Michael Claxton and Robin Miller. The show is directed by Miller.
The production is comprised of three comic tales by Russia’s master of misery — all introduced by a woefully put-upon man and his long-suffering wife, who are trying to produce their first dramatic showcase. Chekhov’s “The Proposal,” “The Bear” and “The Anniversary” will have you in stitches, interrupted by a surprise amateur audition, a digression about tobacco and other hazards of live theatre.
“This production transports you to 19th century Russia, with elegant period costumes and a gorgeous set resembling a Victorian theatre,” said Claxton. “But, behind the visual treat lies some powerful emotion.”
Chekhov's comedies are a unique experience — laugh-out-loud funny one minute, deadly serious the next. He finds humor in the oddest situations: a man asking a grieving widow to pay her late husband's debts, a bank celebrating its anniversary amid chaos, a couple who can't stop arguing long enough for him to propose marriage, and a henpecked husband forced to give a lecture on the evils of tobacco.
“As a writer, it's been fun to have a small hand in providing material for the show, and nothing is more satisfying than seeing talented actors and crew bring your words alive on the stage,” said Claxton.
“Attendees are going to experience a strong mix of verbal and physical comedy,” said Miller. “This is going to be a great date for Valentine’s weekend.”
