University student dies following car crash

March 16, 2019 | Mary Joy Uebelein (20), a student at Harding University, died Saturday morning, March 16, 2019, from injuries sustained in an automobile crash. The accident occurred on March 8 about 7 p.m. on Highway 67 east of De Soto, Missouri, about an hour from home. Mary Joy, along with sister Rachel Uebelein, who is also a University student, was driving home for spring break when her car was initially stuck by a pick up truck. The car veered across the center median into oncoming traffic, struck a semi and was hit by another car. Rachel suffered minor injuries. “Because the Harding student body and the larger Harding family are so tightly-knit, the death of any student has a deep and profound impact on the entire campus. Even those who did not personally know Mary Joy know  someone who knew her well. Once again, Harding students will gather in chapel and on the steps of the Benson Auditorium to grieve together, to celebrate the life of a classmate, and to reaffirm our hope as Christians,” said University President Bruce McLarty Mary Joy was a junior nursing major from Wildwood, Missouri and a member of Delta Gamma Rho women’s social club. Mary Joy was known as a light to all who knew her and will be deeply missed. The University will hold a prayer vigil in memory of Mary Joy on campus next week, as well as a memorial chapel. President McLarty will lead a special prayer for the Uebeleins in chapel on Monday.
