Fall Liberal Arts Colloquium Series presents topics from 1969 and 1989

The Harding University College of Arts & Humanities is teaming up with the colleges of Sciences and Bible and Ministry to host their fall Liberal Arts Colloquium Series. For two evenings, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. in Cone Chapel, University faculty will make presentations highlighting an element of their field that had significance in 1969 and 1989.

On Monday, Oct. 14, Dutch Hoggatt, Lambert Murray, Ed Wilson and Jim Miller will take a look back on the year 1969. Topics of discussion will include media, music, movies, the Apollo 11 mission, Harding’s involvement with NASA, and Vietnam and journalism.

"The turbulent decade of the 1960s ended with a bang in 1969,” said Dutch Hoggatt, communications professor. “The Woodstock Music Festival hosted more than 30 performers and nearly a half million young people; the world's greatest music group was on the verge of breaking up; a 1969 X-rated film won an Academy Award for Best Picture; the Vietnam conflict neared its end; and man walked on the moon. I lived through this period of history and am excited about sharing my memories and thoughts."

The second evening will be Monday, Nov. 4. Allen Diles, Cliff Ganus III, Russ Keck and Liann Gallagher will highlight events from the year 1989. Topics of discussion will include carrying the gospel beyond the Iron Curtain, Soviet music and propaganda, the Watchmen novel and the Cold War, and Tiananmen Square and the failure of the revolution.

“This [series] helps create opportunities for faculty and students to discuss points of contact across the liberal arts, topics that affect everybody in some way,” said Julie Harris, history professor.
