A Glimpse of Jesus

by Parker (’21) and Annesly Young (’21) Pruitt

Mac Sandlin holds the marriage license after performing the ceremony for Parker and Annesly Young Pruitt's weddingIf you’ve ever wondered what Jesus would be doing in everyday life, spend an evening at Mac Sandlin’s house. We’ve had the privilege of doing just that — week after week, year after year — and we’ve come away each time with full hearts, full minds and a deeper understanding of what Christlike hospitality and love can look like in practice.

Dr. Sandlin invited us into his home not only as students but as friends. He and his family welcomed us to their table for a weekly book club, where we shared not only words and ideas but also stories, meals and laughter. It wasn’t just a tradition. It was a ministry. In a world that is so often marked by isolation and performance, Dr. Sandlin’s home was a place of grace, curiosity and warmth. He created space for us to ask hard questions and challenge deep convictions, all while making sure everyone had a seat and a voice. His presence made the gospel feel tangible.

Mac is one of those rare people who radiates humility even as he stands out in excellence. He is one of the most brilliant thinkers we’ve ever encountered, with a mind steeped in Scripture, theology, ethics and the deep questions of the human heart. Yet, he wears his wisdom lightly. He doesn’t lead with his intellect. He leads with kindness and warmth. His confidence is sometimes loud; it’s rooted in the Spirit. He knows who he is, and that gives him the freedom to pour into others.

He didn’t just teach us how to think about God. He showed us what it means to walk with God. He didn’t just talk about community. He built it. And when we got married, there was no one else we could have imagined standing at the front with us. As the officiant at our wedding, Mac didn’t simply perform a ceremony; he blessed our union with the same intentionality, joy and spiritual depth that he brings to every part of our lives. That day, his words reminded us once again what it means to be loved, not just by each other, but by a God who is with us.

Even now, Mac continues to shine his light at Harding University. He pours himself into the students he teaches, not just through lectures or assignments, but by showing up in the lives of those around him. He listens deeply. He tells the truth. He models a faith that is thoughtful, courageous and full of grace. And in doing so, he helps others believe that it’s possible to live like Jesus, even in a busy, distracted world.

We are just two among many who have been shaped by his life. But if you’ve met Dr. Mac Sandlin, you’ve encountered a glimpse of Jesus — warm, wise and always ready to welcome you in.
