The Harding University Board of Trustees announced today a contract extension for President Mike Williams, recognizing his transformative leadership and significant achievements since taking office. The extension reflects the board’s confidence in Williams’ strategic vision and his ability to guide the institution into its next era of growth and impact.
Under President Williams’ leadership, Harding has experienced remarkable progress across key areas of the University’s mission to transform learners for global impact by engaging minds and nurturing faith within a deeply connected community. His tenure has been marked by a renewed focus on strategic growth and the strengthening of the University’s foundational values.
“President Williams has demonstrated a profound commitment to Harding’s Christ-centered mission, and his leadership has yielded extraordinary results,” said Charles Ganus, chairman of the board of trustees. “His forward-thinking approach has not only strengthened our academic offers and financial position but has also fortified our distinct identity in the landscape of Christian higher education. We are excited for the future of Harding under his continued guidance.”
Williams has led the University through a period of significant growth, with a 9% increase in total headcount and a 22% growth in new student enrollment. A consistently high retention rate of 87% speaks volumes about the level of academic excellence and faith-based community students are experiencing.
A key initiative of his vision has been the revitalization of Harding School of Theology, including its relocation to the main Searcy campus, a restructured pricing model to enhance the affordability of theological education and the launch of a new $9 million theological library construction project. HST is expected to double its enrollment within the first three years following the relocation.
President Williams has also spearheaded several critical institutional developments, including the creation of the Second Century Strategic Plan; new mission, vision and value statements; and a comprehensive campus master plan.
Additionally, his administration has launched innovative new academic programs, including a bachelor’s degree in artificial intelligence, an accelerated nursing program, and graduate degrees in occupational therapy and cardiac function and interventional technology. The new Digital Forensics Lab received ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation for forensic services from the ANSI National Accreditation Board, the highest national standard for testing and calibration laboratories, in October 2025.
The University's reputation as a top-tier institution has been recognized across the country including being named #8 Christian University in America by Niche, a Best Regional College by The Princeton Review and a 2025-26 College of Distinction.
Harding University athletics continue to excel on a national stage with NCAA Division II national champions in football and track and field.
His commitment to preparing students for a life of purpose is underscored by the Big Questions initiative, which reinforces the University's brand promise to students. As Williams has stated, "The clarity around our mission and brand promise is accelerating our recruitment efforts to attract more mission-aligned students."
The leadership team assembled by President Williams has been instrumental in executing these plans, fostering an environment of collaboration and shared purpose. His contract extension ensures a continuity of leadership as the University continues to pursue its vision of being known around the world for educating and inspiring students to relentlessly pursue God's truth, excellence and love.
