Music department welcomes Saint Louis Brass

The department of music will host Saint Louis Brass on Monday, Nov. 7, in the Administration Auditorium at 7 p.m. Saint Louis Brass is the third performance of the University’s 2016-17 Arts and Life Concert Series.

Saint Louis Brass is one of the longest standing brass quintets in the U.S. The group, originally formed by members of the St. Louis Symphony in 1964, features the tuba, trombone, French horn and trumpets and has performed for more than 3,000 audiences across the U.S., Mexico and Japan. The group creates a fun and informal atmosphere by combining world-class talent and showmanship that dispels the stuffiness sometimes associated with classical chamber music.

The program will feature American composers of both jazz and classical genre. The quintet has commissioned two jazz oriented arrangements — a compilation of Louis Armstrong favorites as well as a new composition, “Four Times Five,” by young American composer Joshua Hobbs. They will perform an audience favorite — “Animal Ditties” by Anthony Plog in which the brass music is used to accompany clever Ogden Nash poems about animals. Concert attendees can also expect a humorous history of brass instruments from the time of King Tut to the present day.
