CSD to host free community forum on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease

The Harding University College of Allied Health and department of communication sciences and disorders will host a free community forum on dementia and Alzheimer’s disease at 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 1 in Reynolds Recital Hall.

Keynote speaker Becky Khayum will present “Overview of Dementia Syndromes and Practical Strategies for Memory and Communication.” Khayum is co-founder and president of MemoryCare Corp. in Aurora, Illinois, which provides person-centered therapy services for people with dementia across the Chicago region.

“One in three seniors dies with dementia or Alzheimer’s according to information released by the Alzheimer's Association,” said Dr. Dan Tullos, professor and chairman of the communication sciences and disorders department. “This indicates that all of us will either have or personally care for individuals with dementia at some point in our lives. This forum is an opportunity for us to share a nationally known speaker with our community who specializes in caring for individuals with this dreadful disease.”

On Friday, Feb. 2 , Khayum will present further findings at the CSD’s Richard Walker Conference in the David B. Burks American Heritage Building with registration opening at 7:30 a.m. The annual conference provides Continuing Education Units to professionals working in the field, and topics follow the direction of American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in further developing knowledge and skills of professionals in critical areas such as supervision and ethical practice.
