Dr. Michael Lindsay

The American Studies Institute hosted award-winning sociologist and educator Michael Lindsay, the eighth president of Gordon College and an expert on religion, culture and leadership, for a closed event on Monday, Feb. 22. Lindsay’s lecture, View from the Top, was titled after his latest book, the University’s Harding Read, and featured personal stories and powerful findings from the Platinum Study, a groundbreaking study of 550 elite American CEOs, senior government leaders and nonprofit executives. The event was live streamed and can be watched on demand.

“What I found over the course of interviewing this amazing array of people is that oftentimes they had to get to a place of being vulnerable about their challenges and their experiences. You really have to be willing to show up and be visible. We grow the most in those moments of great vulnerability. Failure and risk, those are your friends. It’s in that season that the Lord uses it to really help you develop to become the leader you’re going to be."

During the lecture, Lindsay was joined by Platinum Study subject, Harding alumnus and PwC Real Estate Leader Byron Carlock, who reflected on how his experiences as a student at Harding changed his trajectory.

Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Lindsay graduated summa cum laude from Baylor University and holds graduate degrees in theology from Princeton Theological Seminary and Wycliffe Hall at Oxford. He earned his Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University. His work has been profiled in hundreds of media outlets worldwide, and his research has been funded through fellowships awarded by the American Council of Learned Societies, the National Academy of Education and the National Science Foundation. He currently serves on the board of Christianity Today and the Veritas Forum.
