Summer may seem like a lifetime away right now, but internship opportunities are available, and spots are filling fast. The College of Pharmacy offers an eight-week, paid prepharmacy internship for those planning to pursue a Doctor of Pharmacy. This program provides experiential learning and prepares future pharmacy students for graduate school.
Among those who completed the internship last summer, three students are now in their first year of pharmacy school. The education they received during their internship has prepared them for all that lies ahead in their field of study.
Brooke Robinson shared that this experience helped her gain pharmacy expertise and also helped her refine multiple skills that have served her well during her first year of training.
“I learned how to communicate more effectively during this internship, whether it be communicating with people who were coming in and out of the pharmacy or those who were supervising me,” she said. “I learned how to receive constructive feedback and how to apply it to the areas where I was struggling.”
When Jade Davis completed the internship, she found that the process gave her the opportunity to establish meaningful relationships with faculty members as her mentors.
“The professors here truly care about their students, not just academically but personally, too,” Davis said. “Getting to know them outside of class showed me how passionate they are about helping us succeed.”
Cameron Head said the opportunity is unmatched and encouraged those interested to apply.
"The internship gave me valuable hands-on experience in the field of pharmacy," he said. "It allowed me to build a strong foundation and become familiar with daily pharmacy operations. Now, as a pharmacy student, I already understand many of the concepts and responsibilities thanks to that experience."
Whether it is compounding, communicating or learning about legislation, the program exposes its students to a number of areas within pharmacy. The College of Pharmacy seeks to educate future pharmacists who accept the responsibility to improve the spiritual and physical well-being of the world by providing patient-centered care that ensures optimal medication therapy outcomes, delivered through the highest standards of Christian service.
