Pennsylvania Playoff Pit Stop

Headed to PA to cheer on the Bisons? Mark Christaldi ('88) recommends a stop at WAWA, a Pennsylvania treasure.

In Pennsylvania, stop at a Wawa convenience store, famous for made-to-order fresh food — especially the hoagies — and freshly brewed coffee, breakfast food and other Pennsylvania favorites like a Tastykake baked snack or a soft pretzel. You can also fuel up on gas at many locations, and air pumps are free. Wawa began in 1902 as a dairy farm in Wawa, Pennsylvania. Its name comes from the Ojibwe word for the Canada goose which you will see in the logo. It now has more than 1,100 stores in 13 states and Washington, D.C.

Use the touchscreen to place your order; then pay and wait a few minutes. Once your food arrives, just drop your order receipt into the basket and walk out. Wawa has an exceptionally strong, almost "cult-like" following. It’s a gas station, but it’s a magical gas station. So get ready. And in Southeast PA, if someone holds the door for you at Wawa, a response of "Go Birds!" is an appropriate substitute for "thank you." Gottahava Wawa.
