College of Education to host Katherine Paterson

The Cannon-Clary College of Education graduate reading program’s 2015-16 Young Adult Author Series will kick off Friday, Nov. 6 with Katherine Paterson.

Paterson currently resides in Vermont and is the author of more than 30 books. She has twice won the Newbery Medal for “Bridge to Terabithia” and “Jacob Have I Loved.” “The Master Puppeteer” won the National Book Award, and “The Great Gilly Hopkins” won the National Book Award and a Newbery Honor. For the body of her work, she received the Hans Christian Anderson Award and the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and the Library of Congress has named her a Living Legend.

Paterson will discuss her background on Friday and her current work as well as how to better teach students to be writers on Saturday. The series will include a Friday night meal, a Saturday morning continental breakfast, and an author information packet.

Event prices are $125 for one event; $100 each for two events; and $75 each to attend three events. In addition to providing 10 hours of professional development for teachers per event, the events can provide graduate credit hours applied during the semester in which a student attends an event. Students have the option to receive one-hour graduate credit for each event attended with an additional fee and an online assignment to be completed after the event. It is $125 per one-hour credit, and registration forms for graduate credit will be available at the event.
