Harding University is hosting its annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Friday, Oct. 21 through Saturday, Oct. 22. The theme of the event is Passport to Hope.
“Relay for Life provides hope to people who have cancer, and the ACS is doing incredible research to find new treatments and provide cures,” said Lisa Bryant, assistant professor of education and Relay for Life advisor. “I think it is an important event because it’s a way to find hope beyond cancer.”
The Relay for Life executive committee is aiming to raise $20,000, approximately $4,000 more than last year’s record account of $16,346. Nearly 25 teams will participate in the event and will offer a variety of entertainment and food representing several different countries. A photo booth, rock wall, video games, and baked potato bar are among the services available. A slideshow of survivors, parade and musical entertainment will be provided by the Relay for Life executive committee.
“Almost everybody has been affected by cancer in some way,” student director of Relay for Life Drew Howerton said. “This will be an amazing event that not only does a lot of good in bringing together the Harding community but also supports a wonderful cause that brings us one step closer to defeating cancer for good.”
The event will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with an opening ceremony and opportunity for cancer survivors to walk a lap around the front lawn of the Harding campus. A luminary ceremony will take place at dusk. The white paper bags illuminated with small candles will be available for $5 each to commemorate those who have been diagnosed with cancer. The luminaries will be lit and displayed around the front lawn as a symbol of hope for a cure.
“For me, Relay for Life has been a way to deal with a loss and feel like I was doing something productive,” Bryant said. “Cancer can be beaten. God provides miracles, but we are helping fund the cure.”
