Harding University hosts annual Relay for Life

Oct. 25, 2017 |

Harding University is hosting its annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Friday, Oct. 27 through Saturday, Oct. 28. The theme of the event is “Cancer Is No Game.”

“Relay for Life provides hope to people who have cancer, and the ACS is doing incredible research to find new treatments and provide cures,” said Lisa Bryant, assistant professor of education and Relay for Life advisor. “I think it is an important event because it’s a way to find hope beyond cancer.”

The Relay for Life executive committee is aiming to raise $18,000, surpassing last year’s record amount of $16,500. Thirty-three teams will participate in the event, and a slideshow of survivors, parade and musical entertainment will be provided by the Relay for Life executive committee. In addition, there will be a photo booth, games and lots of food.

“[It] is a night of awareness and fundraising that truly celebrates Harding's desire to be a community of mission,” student co-director of Relay for Life Audra Staley said. “Cancer is an all too common and devastating reality for so many. This night is not only a chance to honor those who have fought or are currently fighting their battle with cancer, but also an opportunity to raise money for a future without cancer entirely!”

The event will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with an opening ceremony and opportunity for cancer survivors to walk a lap around the front lawn of the Harding campus. A luminary ceremony will take place at dusk. The white paper bags illuminated with small candles will be available for $5 each to commemorate those who have been diagnosed with cancer. The luminaries will be lit and displayed around the front lawn as a symbol of hope for a cure.

“For me, Relay for Life has been a way to deal with a loss and feel like I was doing something productive,” Bryant said. “Cancer can be beaten. God provides miracles, but we are helping fund the cure.”
