Harding University stands strong with Relay for Life

Harding University is hosting its annual Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society (ACS) Friday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 6. The theme of the event is “Standing Strong Through the Years.”

“Relay for Life is such a great opportunity to get involved in the fight against cancer that affects so many,” student co-director of Relay for Life Abbie Lippincott said. “I hope this event brings more awareness of the American Cancer Society that does so much to further cancer research and support for all the families affected by this disease.”

The Relay for Life executive committee is aiming to raise $20,000, surpassing last year’s $16,100. Thirty teams will participate in the event, and a slideshow, a survivors parade and musical entertainment will be provided by the Relay for Life executive committee. In addition, each team will have a booth featuring games, food and more to contribute to the fundraising goal.

“In the seven years I have been at Harding, I've seen Relay grow and it has literally doubled in funds raised for ACS and in participation,” said Lisa Bryant, assistant professor of education and Relay for Life advisor. “Most importantly I have met students who have the most incredible servant hearts and I am privileged to see Jesus in the sweet faces of all of the volunteers who work tirelessly to make the event a success!”

The event will begin at 5 p.m. Friday with an opening ceremony and opportunity for cancer survivors to walk a lap around the front lawn of the Harding campus. Additional groups will make a lap around the front lawn at the top of every hour until 5 a.m. A luminary ceremony will take place at 9 p.m. The white paper bags containing small candles will be available for $5 each to commemorate those who have been diagnosed with cancer. The luminaries will be lit and displayed around the front lawn as a symbol of hope for a cure.

“For me, Relay for Life has been a way to deal with a loss and feel like I was doing something productive,” Bryant said. “Cancer can be beaten. God provides miracles, but we are helping fund the cure.”
