Department of Music presents ‘An Evening with C.S. Lewis’

Harding University welcomes back playwright and actor David Payne as C.S. Lewis in “An Evening with C.S. Lewis” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6 in the Benson Auditorium as the third performance in the 2018-19 Arts and Life Performance Series. The University is hosting a number of events during its C.S. Lewis Festival Nov. 5-10 and invites area residents to attend.

The critically acclaimed one-man show is essentially a fireside chat, in which Lewis (portrayed by Payne), nearing the end of his time, shares stories from his life and career. These stories include his childhood in Belfast, his time as an atheist and his return to Christianity, the love of his life, why he nearly abandoned “The Chronicles of Narnia,” and his famous friendship with “The Lord of the Rings” author J.R.R. Tolkien. To date, he has presented this show more than 700 times during the past 15 years.

“We are really looking forward to having David Payne back on the Harding stage Tuesday evening for an unprecedented third year in a row,” said Dr. Jay Walls, associate professor of music. “Mr. Payne, a true Englishman who loves his tea in real life, has been so well received by our audiences, and he loves performing in Searcy. In fact, he has gone out of his way to [fit in] this show on Tuesday between two other performances early next week in order to help us celebrate the life and works of Lewis.”
