HU celebrates fall commencement

Harding University’s fall commencement was held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 15 in Benson Auditorium celebrating the accomplishments of nearly 400 students.

Members of this semester’s graduating class represent seven countries and territories including American Samoa, Canada, China, Dominican Republic, Japan, Spain, the United Kingdom, as well as 37 states.

Nineteen different degrees were conferred from the College of Allied Health, College of Arts and Humanities, College of Bible and Ministry, Paul R. Carter College of Business Administration, Cannon-Clary College of Education, Carr College of Nursing, College of Pharmacy, College of Sciences, and the Honors College.

The speaker was Harding alumnus Dr. Joel Anderson, who currently serves as chancellor-emeritus of University of Arkansas at Little Rock and scholar-in-residence for UALR Anderson Institute on Race and Ethnicity. He previously served as chancellor from 2003 to 2016 and also has served as assistant professor of political science, founding dean of UALR Graduate School, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

Anderson has served on 11 boards, including the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra and United Way and most recently the Arkansas United Community Coalition board. He chaired the boards of the Arkansas 4-H Foundation and the Arkansas Science and Technology Authority. He also served as president of the Rotary Club of Little Rock. Numerous organizations have recognized him for his contributions including Arkansas 4-H Clubs, Just Communities of Arkansas, Watershed, League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), Winthrop Rockefeller Foundation, World Services for the Blind, Fifty for the Future, and the U.S. Small Business Administration. Dr. Anderson served as a scholar-in-residence at the Center on Community Philanthropy, UA Clinton School of Public Service.

President Bruce McLarty conferred the earned degrees at the ceremony.
